[4:24]  1 tn Heb “in order that.”

[4:24]  2 tn Or “peoples.”

[4:24]  3 tn Heb “know the hand of the Lord that it is strong.”

[4:24]  4 tn Heb “fear.”

[5:11]  5 tn The Hebrew text adds, “on this same day.” This is somewhat redundant in English and has not been translated.

[6:10]  6 tn Heb “the people.”

[6:10]  7 tn Or “the shout.”

[6:10]  8 tn Heb “do not let a word come out of your mouths.”

[6:10]  9 tn Or “the shout.”

[6:10]  10 tn Or “the shout.”

[6:18]  11 tn Heb “Only you keep [away] from what is set apart [to the Lord] so that you might not, as you are setting [it] apart, take some of what is set apart [to the Lord] and make the camp of Israel set apart [to destruction by the Lord] and bring trouble on it.”

[10:2]  12 tn This statement is subordinated to v. 1 in the Hebrew text, which reads literally, “When Adoni-Zedek…they feared greatly.” The subject of the plural verb at the beginning of v. 2 is probably the residents of Jerusalem.

[11:17]  13 tn Heb “and struck them down and killed them.”

[11:20]  14 tn Heb “for from the Lord it was to harden their heart[s] to meet for the battle with Israel, in order to annihilate them, so that they would receive no mercy, in order annihilate them, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

[12:6]  15 tn Heb “gave it for a possession.”

[13:1]  16 tn Heb “was old, coming into the days.” This expression, referring to advancing in years, also occurs in the following clause.

[15:1]  17 tn Heb “The lot was to the tribe of the sons of Judah by their clans to the border of Edom, the wilderness of Zin toward the south, southward.”

[16:8]  18 tn Heb “This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim.”

[22:20]  19 tn Heb “Is it not [true that] Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful with unfaithfulness concerning what was set apart [to the Lord] and against all the assembly of Israel there was anger?”

[22:20]  20 tn The second half of the verse reads literally, “and he [was] one man, he did not die for his sin.” There are at least two possible ways to explain this statement: (1) One might interpret the statement to mean that Achan was not the only person who died for his sin. In this case it could be translated, “and he was not the only one to die because of his sin.” (2) Another option, the one reflected in the translation, is to take the words וְהוּא אִישׁ אֶחָד (vÿhu’ ’ishekhad, “and he [was] one man”) as a concessive clause and join it with what precedes. The remaining words (לֹא גָוַע בַּעֲוֹנוֹ, logavabaavono) must then be taken as a rhetorical question (“Did he not die for his sin?”). Taking the last sentence as interrogative is consistent with the first part of the verse, a rhetorical question introduced with the interrogative particle. The present translation has converted these rhetorical questions into affirmative statements to bring out more clearly the points they are emphasizing. For further discussion, see T. C. Butler, Joshua (WBC), 240.

[23:6]  21 tn Heb “Be strong so you can be careful to do.”
